Chapter Seventeen

Tal took the witch’s wrist and she nearly ran over him. So eager to return, or else, more afraid of the wilderness where he’d left her. Who could say? She came back through though, and her eyes went first to the tent where Torg waited. She stepped toward him, paused, and frowned before continuing.

He couldn’t waste time worrying about them. Today, he had a Gargoyle to locate, and if he could borrow some of the luck that had deserted his brother, he knew exactly where to start. If he could woo fate, he might redeem himself and distract the horde at the same time. He might be able to help Torg for once.

The witch could tend to his brother while he searched. He snuck a glance in their direction and then squatted by the log, turning his attention to finishing his morning meal. If she’d meant to harm Torg, she could have done it the night before. She’d had more than enough chances and more than enough time to run off as well.

He left them together inside the tent and slipped through the membrane. He crossed into the well pocket, the one he’d camped in with Torg. They used it a lot, and as far as he knew, no one else in the horde did.

It was a good place to clean game, to rest and to use as a hub to shift from. Except he didn’t have his crystal now. The witch did. Tal considered going back to retrieve it, but his feet remained like stones in the grass. He could get by without it. He’d just have to be cautious, to keep the pocket wall in hand.

Tal knew where he had to start, but he hesitated to shift there. His green fingers whispered over the membrane while he pictured the drifts of thistledown. What if he’d imagined some of it? He stroked the wall and tried to force his memory into crisp lines. The castle was there. Torg had seen it too, no matter how he’d behaved afterwards. That part was certain. Rulak’s men had been there as well. They’d left signs that both of them had seen. So, he could verify that part as well.

If both hordes had seen the castle, though, who was it that the prophecy called to?

He tried to stretch even further back, to remember the stories his parents had told them as children. By the time a gobelin reached adulthood, the prophecy was ingrained enough that it didn’t require much thought. As a child, however, the stories were recited, repeated, so that the knowledge would continue. But he didn’t think anyone expected it to really happen. Not anymore. Not in their lifetime. The Powers’ return was more myth than real, and yet the castle was there for certain. Gobelin eyes had seen it.

It needed its protectors. The Guardian would summon the defenders. That was it, and he’d already met the Guardian in the glade. Hadn’t he?

Torg hadn’t witnessed that part. Rulak’s men had. If he understood the fragments of their conversation, they recognized the Guardian too.
